SHORT FILM SCREENPLAY
Logline:
An angsty teen takes the fall for vandalizing his school with sunflower graffiti, leading to a life-changing journey of responsibility and hope as he strives to heal his family.
Synopsis:
This screenplay follows Joey, an angsty teenage boy who vandalizes his school property with his artsy friend group, spray painting sunflowers all over campus. After being caught for their latest conquest, Joey takes the fall for the group and gets assigned community service, working with the school gardener Woody. Through their interactions, Joey learns about responsibility and care, particularly for sunflowers, which he shares a fondness for with his parents as they were the flowers his father, Dan always gave his mother, Jenna before they split.
Joey’s relationship with Dan is strained. Dan works long hours and comes home late at night, often drunk and emotional, as he struggles with his relationship with alcohol and the absence of Jenna. Despite this, Joey takes on the role of maintaining the house and caring for his father.
In an attempt to bring the family closer together, the weekend his mother is scheduled to visit, Joey brings some sunflower pots home from community service. He decorates the front lawn with them, however, Dan, in a drunken irrational state, destroys them the night before Jenna returns. The next day, Dan and Joey spend hours cleaning up the mess and preparing the house for Jenna’ return.
The film concludes with Joey presenting the remaining surviving sunflowers to Dan as a gesture for Jenna. The scene hints at a potential reconciliation for the family of three, a possibility of a healing despite the odds and how their complicated situation is a story about resilience in love.
